Foreign language learning has evolved considerably, especially during the 20th century. From the grammar translation method to the action orientated method, to global structural, behavioural, natural, communicative, even eclectic methods, the reasons for such changes can be attributed to both evolutionary and scientific advancement, in particular within human sciences, and changing needs combined with the realisation of the importance of language exchanges, without forgetting the ideological changes which underpin these.
All these changes have also had an impact on the relationship between pupils and teachers, with teachers long having disposed of purely vertical hierarchical methods whereby the teacher unilaterally transmits their knowledge to their pupils. The co-construction of knowledge, savoir-faire and soft skills have all had a significant impact.
